Gilgandra on September 20, the dis-
rict lost one of its most highly res-
pected, and loving pe
rsonalties, forthe deceased was a firm favouritewith all classes of the community.One of our most successful farmers,the late Mr, Hanckel came to thisdistrict in 1912, when Gilgandra wasbut a small village. At that timehe occupied a block of land at the? end of the town adjoining Mr.A. Lummis' property. Later hepurchased "Essington," in the Too-?h Road, and after workingit for many years and making itone of the best properties in the dis-trict, disposed of it in 1923 and cameto live in retirement at "Iona." Hewas a great lover of nature and hisgarden was a picture to behold, hisflowers and vegetables being the ad-miration of all who saw them. Akeen horticulturist, he was an au-thority on this subject and many or-chards were improved by his advicein pruning and planting.The late Mr. Hackel was born atBlumberg (South Australia) on Feb-ruary 20, 1868, and was the son ofMr. and Mrs. Franz Hackel, whomigrated from Germany many yearsbefore. At the age of 16 yearsyoung Hanckel came to N.S.W.and settled on thei land in the Hentydistrict, from whence he came toGilgandra. He was first married atBurrumbuttock, in 1891 to a MissQuast, who predeceased him at Hentyin 1908. There werethree chil-dren of this marriage, viz., Mrs. H.M. Garling, Mr. F. Hanckel (Gil-gandra) and Mr 0. Hanckel(Bathurst). In 1923 he marriedMiss Klinge, who is a sister of Mrs.G. A. Semmler, of "Kiewa," Bear-bong, and Mrs. Hanckel is at pre-sent spending a holiday in Bathurstwith Mr. and Mrs. 0. Hanckel.He leaves four sisters and twobrothers, one of the sisters beingMrs. Lieschke, who recently visitedGilgandra, whilst the brothers areF. H. (Windsor) and Albert H.(Henty).The remains were laid to rest inthe Lutheran portion of the Gilgan-dra cemetery, the burial service be-ing conducted by Mr. Theo Reichelt,in the unavoidable absence of theRev. Lehmann, who was away inTemora.
