DEATH OF F. J. D.
HANCKEL
By tho death of Mr Franz Johann
Daniel Hanckel, which occurred at
his residence 'Iona,' Wombein Street
Gilgandra on September 20, the dis-
rict lost one of its most highly res-
pected, and loving personalties, for
the deceased was a firm favourite
with all classes of the community.
One of our most successful farmers,
the late Mr, Hanckel came to this
district in 1912, when Gilgandra was
but a small village. At that time
he occupied a block of land at the
? end of the town adjoining Mr.
A. Lummis' property. Later he
purchased "Essington," in the Too-
?h Road, and after working
it for many years and making it
one of the best properties in the dis-
trict, disposed of it in 1923 and came
to live in retirement at "Iona." He
was a great lover of nature and his
garden was a picture to behold, his
flowers and vegetables being the ad-
miration of all who saw them. A
keen horticulturist, he was an au-
thority on this subject and many or-
chards were improved by his advice
in pruning and planting.
The late Mr. Hackel was born at
Blumberg (South Australia) on Feb-
ruary 20, 1868, and was the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Franz Hackel, who
migrated from Germany many years
before. At the age of 16 years
young Hanckel came to N.S.W.
and settled on thei land in the Henty
district, from whence he came to
Gilgandra. He was first married at
Burrumbuttock, in 1891 to a Miss
Quast, who predeceased him at Henty
in 1908. There werethree chil-
dren of this marriage, viz., Mrs. H.
M. Garling, Mr. F. Hanckel (Gil-
gandra) and Mr 0. Hanckel
(Bathurst). In 1923 he married
Miss Klinge, who is a sister of Mrs.
G. A. Semmler, of "Kiewa," Bear-
bong, and Mrs. Hanckel is at pre-
sent spending a holiday in Bathurst
with Mr. and Mrs. 0. Hanckel.
He leaves four sisters and two
brothers, one of the sisters being
Mrs. Lieschke, who recently visited
Gilgandra, whilst the brothers are
F. H. (Windsor) and Albert H.
(Henty).
The remains were laid to rest in
the Lutheran portion of the Gilgan-
dra cemetery, the burial service be-
ing conducted by Mr. Theo Reichelt,
in the unavoidable absence of the
Rev. Lehmann, who was away in
Temora.
