39996DROWNED IN THE MURRAY.
Loxton, October 11.
Gustav Leopold Kretschmer (64), left
his home in Loxton last Friday morn-
ing at 6.30 to go fishing in the Murray.
It was his wife's birthday, and he said
be would bring home a large fish. As
he had not returned by mid-day a
search was made, and one of his mar-
ried daughters discovered his walking
stick and tobacco with a bag cont-
taining bait at a spot about a mile
west of Loxton. The police were
advised, and Sergeant Johns and Con-
Stable Pettigrew visited the spot. A
fishing line was found still cast and
fastened to a small stick. Dragging
operations were carried out. and the
body was recovered from the bed of
the river. The coroner (Mr. Arthur
Hunt) deemed an inquest unnecessary
Mr Kretschmer was born in Prussia
and had been a naturalised British sub-
ject since 1884. He landed in Australia
In 1883, and carried on farming near
Sedan for a long time, where he was
widely known and respected. He was
partially blind in the right eye, and
totally blind in the left eye, and it
is surmised that while fishing he tripped
among the roots of the gum trees and
fell into the river.
