LATE GEORGE KNOBEL HAD

COLOURFUL CAREER
The death of Mr. George
Knobel, of Robson Road, Keira-
ville, closes a life that was both
varied and colourful. .
Born at Thurgooria, near Al-
bury, in 1874, where he spent
his childhood, he had many re-
collections of life on the land.
His mother, widowed early in
life, was left with a family of
12 young children and, at a very
tender age, the boy George was
doing his share of chores. In
exhaustible were, the stories he
told of those days, paying hom
age to his mother, relating how,
due to good housewifery, her
preserves kept the larder stock
ed during the winter months.
Still youthful, he ventured forth
and, at the age of 19, took up
land at Trangle, which he clear
ed and fenced and where he
built a home. He married Miss
Mary Anne Roach, also of Tran-
gie. At Trangie he successfully
carried on wheat and sheep
farming.
Almost 42 years ago, Mr. Kno
bel came with his wife and five
children to reside at Keiravllle.
In this district, he will be, re
membered primarily as a build
er. Apart from countless cot
ages, the Crown Theatre and
Lang's Buildings will recall his
name so long as they stand — a
tribute to his versatility and
creative mind.
During the past few months,
Mr. Knobel visited Albury and
various parts of the Riverina
and he told how he had travelled
to see his nephew at Darlington
Point, part way by truck and
part by rowing boat, to reach
the homestead. The property
consists of 2,500 acres, half of
which was submerged by flood
waters and which he viewed
from the rowing boat. Return
ing home for a few days only,
he went with his son and
daughter-inlaw, Mr. and Mrs.
Fred Knobel, for a caravan tour
of the North Coast, where he
indulged, in his favourite recrea
tion, fishing. Whilst at East
Ballina, he decided to pay a sur
prise visit to his youngest
daughter, Catherine (Mrs. Jim
Harris) at Maryborough. Travel
ling by parlour coach to Bris
bane, so that he would see more
of the country, he went to Roma
Street Station, Brisbane, and,
after asking for his ticket at the
booking offlce collapsed and died
before he had time to accept the
ticket.
The remains were brought
from Brisbane to Wollongong
and, after a short service at
home, at which the Rev. Rich
ards officiated, the Interment
took place at Wollongong
Church of England Cemetery,
where Mr. Richards paid a tri
bute to his achievements and
kindliness, quoting from a card
received that morning: 'To the
memory of a grand old man, a
life well lived, of life's work
well-done."
