Mrs. M. E. Heckendorf
With the passing last week of Mrs.
Mary Elizabeth Heckendorf, of 'Pine
Top,' Lockhart, that district has lost
one of its test known identities,
Born in South Australia 78 years
ago, Her mother and her young fam-
ily settled In Wodonga West In 1883,
her maiden surname being Schuster.
She married Mr. C. F. Heckendorf,
who had acquired the 'Pine Top'
property at Lockhart. Unfortunately
when the children were still young
Mr. Heckendorf met an untimely end
as a result of a kick from a horse.
Mrs. Heckendorf decided to take her
young family to Wodonga so that
they could avail tbemselves of the
education facilities that were there,
her husband's brother, Mr. John
Heckendorf, of 'Mt. View,' Lockhavl,
having agreed to manage 'Pine Top'
until such time as Mrs. Heckendorf's
son could take over.
Of a retiring disposition, Mrs.
Heckendorf proved herself, a good
friend and a good neighbour to many
and was a devoted member of the
Lutheran Church.
Surviving her are the following
members of her family: Mrs. J. S.
Heckendorf, of 'Glenlea,' Nyngan; Mr.
Henry Heckendorf and Miss Elsie
Heckendorf, both of 'Pine Top,'
