MR A. H. KOENNECKE
The late Mr. A. H. Koennecke, who
died at his residence in Strathalbyn,
on Nov. 18th, was born at Greenock
on Sept. 1st, 1868, and when only
three years old shifted to Warooka
on Yorke's Peninsula with his par-
ents, who took up farming in that
area. All of Mr. Koennecke's early
life was spent at the homestead pro-
perty at Warooka, which property is
farmed now by the third generation
of the Koennecke family. In 1898
Mr. Koennecke came to the Strath-
albyn district, and took up a large
area of virgin scrub, south of Strath-
albyn, on what was then known as
the main road to Milang. Mr. Koen-
necke, through several years of sheer
hard work eventually managed to
clear a large area of country, and
had the distinction of being probably
the first farmer to use the stump-
jump plough with a tandem team at-
tached. This event attracted consid-
erable interest at the time. He also
used one of the first harvesters in
the district, which eventually was
taken back to Warooka, as the loss
of the cocky-chaff from the harvester
was considered too wasteful. Mr.
Koennecke may be remembered by
many as having a motor buggy, in
which he used to drive in the early
days of motoring. In 1919 Mr. Koen-
necke retired from the farm and came
to reside in Strathalbyn. He took a
very keen interest In bowls, having
won the local championship on two
occasions, also being runner-up. He
was also interested in golf, being a
member of both Angas and Strathal-
byn Clubs. In 1903 Mr. Koennecke
married Amy, third daughter of the
late Mr. William Ansell. The widow
and three children survive.
