RAILWAY EMPLOYEE KILLED.
Mr. Nicholas Westphalen, of East
street, Torrensville, a labourer, em-
ployed in the maintenance department
of the railways, failed to stand far
enough away from the permanent way
near Blackwood, and was struck by a
passing train, and killed.

ADELAIDE, Monday.
Nicholas Westphalen, 61, was killed this
morning while working on the Hills railway
line near Blackwood. He failed to stand clear
quickly enough, and was struck by an engine.

62917A RAILWAY FATALITY.
Mr. Nicholas Westphalen, of East-street,
Torrensville, a lahorer. employed in the
maintenance department of the South
Australian railways, met bis death in
shocking circumstances shortly after 9
o'clock on Monday morning. when he was
struck by the engine of the Strathalbyn
train which was proceeding to Adelaide.
Soon after leaving Blackwood passengers
by the train were startled by the applica-
tion of the emergency brakes. The train
was brought to a standstill, and it was
evident that a serious accident had oc-
curred, for a few seconds later the fire-
man ran along the length of the train,
calling for a doctor. It was raining
heavily at the time and a number of
men who were employed on the per-
manent way were sheltering in a tent at
a little distance. In answer to the calls
for assistance they ran to the scene of the
accident, where it was discovered that
one of their number. Mr. Westphalen,
who had evidently remained behind for
some reason when the rest took shelter,
had been struck by the engine.
The injured man, who was uncon-
scious was lifted into the brake-van and
conveyed to Adelaide. On the arrival of
the train he was taken to the Adelaide
Hospital but on arrival Dr. Fisher pro-
jounced life to be extinct.
