Mr. E. J. Powell

Mr. Evan James Powell, 72, who
died suddenly at Kersbrook on Sep
tember 1, was born at Springhill
Farm, Kersbrook, and was the second
son of the late Mr. David Powell. He
was educated at Kersbrook, and with
the exception of a trip to the conti-
nent in 1907, was engaged in agricul-
tural and horticultural pursuits all his
life. In 1887 he was married to Miss
Bertha Schiementz, second daughter
of the late Mr. and Mrs. H. Schie-
mentz, of Lyndoch. Mr. Powell, see
ing the possibility of fruitgrowing be
coming lucrative, decided to conduct
operations in a big way. With the
assistance of his wife, who died three
years ago, and their family, he planted
150 acres of orchard, mostly apples
and pears, on ground which was
heavily timbered and hard to clear. He
became a large exporter of apples and
pears, and was a well known identity
in the fruit trade. He served as a
councillor for Para Wirra lor more
than 20 years, and was one of the
directors of the Fruitgrowers' Coope-
rative Society for several years. He
was also a trustee for the Kersbrook
Hall and Soldiers' Memorial Park, and
took an active interest in all branches
of sport. There was a family of ten,
nine of whom survive. They are:—
Mr. D. Powell, of Williamstown; Mr.
E. Powell, of Kersbrook; Mr. C. Powell,
Prospect; Mrs. W. Crook, Adelaide;
Mrs. A. Hobby, Adelaide; Mrs. E. Wil
key, Red Hill; Mrs. K. Davids, Kers-
brook; Mrs. L. Houlahan, Millbrook;
and Miss M. Powell, Kersbrook.
