Chronicle (Adelaide, SA : 1895 - 1954) Thursday 8 December 1938
50101Mr. W. E. Spehr
Mr. William Edward Spehr, 57, who
died recently at Millicent, was the
eldest of the family of four sons and
six daughters of the late Mr. and Mrs.
A. G. Spehr, of Willow Bank. As a
young man, Mr. Spehr visited New
Zealand, and imported the Clydesdale
stallion Moeraki, one of many good
horses bought and bred by him, and
the sire of stock which took numerous
prizes in show rings. He did much to
build up the quality of draught stock
in the lower South-East. Mr. Spehr
was a first-ciass farmer as well as ex-
pert stock manager. Before his mar-
riage he was afflicted with rheuma-
tism, and was compelled to seek a
change of climate. He married Miss
Eda A. Ey, daughter of the late Mr.
and Mrs. Otto Ey, of Millicent, and
they settled on a farm at Parkes, New
South Wales. Mr. Spehr farmed with
success, regained his health, and re
turned to his home town to resume
farming and grazing. A few years ago
he built a modern residence in the
town, and took an active interest in
bowls and social life. He was an
enthusiastic supporter of football,
sheep dog field trials, and of the agri-
cultural society. After giving up the
breeding of livestock, he acted as horse
judge at numerous shows. He exhi-
bited sheep successfully at Millicent
and Mount Gambier shows, and dur-
ing the past two or three years had
begun to build up a flock of Border
Leicester sheep with a view to the pro-
duction of export lambs. He leaves a
widow and two daughters— Mrs. Chris.
Hunt (Kalangadoo) and Mrs. Jack
Watts (Millicent).
