Mr. Richard D. Paddock, who died last
week, was born on May 26, 1838, at
Houston Hall, Shropshire. He was
the eldest eon of Mr. Richard Paddock,
who rented the hall from Lord Dannerby,
and who won many prizes for the best cul-
tivated land in Shropshire. In the year
1848 his parents sailed for South Aus
tralia with the Decon family, and his
father took up land near Gawler, where
they resided for many years. Mr Paddock  
was manager for Mr. Simpson Newland.
He was one of the chief characters in the
book 'Paving the Way.' In 1878 he mar-  
ried the eldest daughter of Mr. G. H,
Brown, of Riverton. There were no chil-
dren, but there is an adopted daughter,
Mrs Boorman, Burra, with several nieces,  
and nephews. Only one brother remains,
Mr. John Paddock, of Victoria.
