78974Mr. Charles Edward Runge, the well
known chemist, whose death occurred at
his residence, Angas-street, on September
13, was born at Kent Town, 68 years
ago. At the age of 16 he was
indentured to Messrs. Main & Geyer
of Hindley-Street, a leading firm of
Adelaide chemists. Mr. Runge early dis-
played ability in the profession he had de-
cided to follow. During the 30 yeare he
remained with Main & Geyer he was chief
dispenser and later manager. He came
into touch with many prominent early
colonists, and had some interesting stories
to tell of them. In the middle 70's Mr.
Runge spent two years as Government
dispenser at Darwin and during that
period experienced much hardship and pri-
vation, but accoomplished useful work
among the civilian and native population,
for which he was publicly thanked on his
departure. Nearly 40 years ago he opened
the pharmacy in Angas-street that has so
long been associated with his name. His
genial qualities and kindly disposition
gained for him a wide circle of friends. Mr
Runge applied himself assiduously to his
business, and did not take any active part
in public affairs, although he was asked
on several occasions to do so. He was a
member of the Pharmaceutical Society
from its inception. He left a
widow, four sons— Messrs. Percival Runge,
M.P.S., Ph.C, Edward, Frederick, and
William Runge— and one daughter, Mrs.
W. Paddock, of Unley.
