CORONER SAYS HE SHOT HIMSELF.WHETHER INTENTIONAL ORACCIDENTAL IS UNKNOWN.
An inquiry was held at the PirieCourthouse yesterday by the Coroner(Mr. D. C. Scott) into tlie circumstan-ces surrounding the death, of OliverCromwell Axon,. which occurred, on ,Monday afternoon. Sergeant Mattinappeared for the police.Evidence was given by the widow,Annie Axon, to the effect that her hus-band was 69 years of age. She lastsaw him alive at 11.30 o'clock on Mon-day. The deceased had not been wellduring the last fortnight. He said toher: "Can I go for a drink?" and wit-ness replied: "No; if you go I must gowith you." He answered: "Well, thatsettles it." and he went straight to hisroom, which was detached from thehouse. Shortly-afterwards her grand-daughter said: "Oh. daddy's donesomething to himself." Witness wentto the room, and saw her husband sit-ting on a tool chest and leaning onthe bed. She noticed a wound in hisforehead that was bleeding and saw apea-rifle on; the floor as if it had slip-ped out of his hand. The rifle wasusually kept in his room. She hadnever heard him threaten to take hislife. About a week ago her son, ather suggestion, took the rifle out of thebedroom, as she was afraid he mightdo himself some harm. Her husbandhad been drinking, but he was soberon Monday. After her gandchild spoketo her, she heard a noise of a bump asif something had fallen.Edward Lewis Axon, son of the de-ceased, said he last saw his father aliveat 7 o'clock on Monday morning. Hewas then very shaky. The pea-rifle be-longed to his father, and was used forshooting sparrows and cats. He couldnot give any reason why the deceasedshould shoot himself. The sparrowswere a source of annoyance, as theydid damage to the grape vines and fruittrees. Shot cartridges were used forthe sparrows, and ball cartridges forcats. The deceased was ruptured badlyand was at times very irritable. Hehad been drinking "pinkie" and beerduring the past fortnight.The Coroner: It is a pity the use of"pinkie" cannot be prohibited.Dr. O. Leitch deposed that he ex-amined the deceased at 11.30 a.m. onMonday at his house, No. 11. Revellstreet. He was lying on a bed, andwas unconscious and bleeding from agunshot wound on the left upper partof the frontal bone. witness orderedhis removal to the hospital. The woundhad been inflicted at close quarters.An operation was performed at the hos-pital, but the deceased died at 2.30p.m. from laceration of the brain, compression, and continuous hemorrhagecaused by the wound.Margaret Foster, aged eleven, wholived with her grand-parents in Revellstreet, said that after her grandmotherspoke to deceased on Monday morninghe went into his bedroom, and sheheard the report of a gun. She wentinto the room with her grandmotherand saw her grandfather lying on a boxThere was no one else in the room.Constable TL Martin deposed that hewas called to the house and saw thedeceased lying on a bed. bleeding fromthe wound. There was a Iirge pool ofblood on the floor. A pea-rifle wasstanding on the floor against the walland it contained a discharged cartridge.The Coroner returned a verdict thatthe deceased had met his death by gunshot, self inflicted, and that the evi-dence does not show whether it wasintentional or accidental.
