88974DEATH OF CR. S. GROSS
Leading District Figure
The death of Mr. Samuel Gross
at the Wembley private hospital on
Sunday, removes one of' the dis-
tricot's best known public figures,
for he was prominently associated,
with most commiunity movements
in the Horsham South area.
Born at Drung Drung 72 years ago,
he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Friedrich Gross who were amongst
the: early settlers of the district, hav-
ing selected land there. He lived
there until 1923 when he gave up
active farming, but he continued his
interest and the property is still run
by his sons..
Keenly interested in ihe affairs of
his district he was elected a repres-
entative of the South riding of the
Wiminera Shire 13 years ago, and he
became President, in 1941-42. He
brought to the task an intimate know-
ledge of the district and the people he
represented, and was prominently
associated with the progress made
by the Shire in recent years. He was
very approachable and had a turn of
phrase which livened many a debate.
He was keenly interested in the
political and industrial organisation
of primary producers, and the Hor-
sham branches of the Country Party
and Wheatgrowers Association claim-
ed him as a foundation member. He
held office in both bodies and was
a frequent delegate to their State and
district conferences.
For more than 20 years he had been
a committeeman and steward of the
Horsham Agricultural Society, and
was keenly interested in the develop-
ment of farming practice being a
successful faimer himself.
Most of the activities of the dis-
trict had his enthusiastic support, and
he was a foundation member, and
president for seven years of the Hor-
sham South Bush Fire Brigade. He
was active in the Lutheran Church
at Green Lake, and until recently
was a trustee. Even after he came
to live in Horsham eight years ago.
he continued his association with most
of the affairs of his birthplace, and
gave his support to the recent move-
ment to build a hall at Drung.
The presence of this good citizen
will be greatly missed in the Horsham
South, area.
He was married at Green Lake
to Miss Pauline Stoessel who survives
him to mourn the loss together with
his family in Florence (Mrs O. Peter-
ing, Murtoa), Clarice (Mrs: E. Hart-
wick, Geelong), Rollet and Kenneth,
