Mrs. Elizabeth £. Tamblyn.
The death of Mrs. Elizabeth E. Tam-
blyn, has removed one of the earliest resi-
dents of the Kadina district (writes our
local correspondent). Mrs. Tamblyn was
born at St. Just, Cornwall, nearly 80 years
ago, and came to Australia with her
parents in the ship La Belle Alliance, in
1849. After a brief residence in Adelaide,
then a mere village, ber father, was attrac-
ted by the lure of gold in Victoria, and
the family set out in a dray for the dig-
gings. At Ballarat a tent was erected,
and the family settled down again. Dur-
ing this period the deceased was married to
Mr. James Tamblyn. The old lady well
remembered the trouble which resulted
when the Victorian authorities sent police
to collect the gold diggers' licence fees,
which culminated in the Eureka Stockade
fracas on December 3. 1854. After a few
years on the goldfielua with varying suc-
cess, the Burra Copper Mine came into
prominence, and with her husband and
others Mrs. Tamblyn returned to South
Australia, and a settlement was effected in
a dugout on the banks of the Buna Creek.
Upon the discovery of copper at Wallaroo
Mines, many of the Burra miners went to
the pebinsula, among them Mr Tamblyn.
The country at that, period was covered
by dense mallee inhabited by blades. Mrs.
Tamblyn joined her husband a few months
later (in 1860), and was one of the first
few white women to arrive at the new
mine. The deceased, who lived at the
mines and Kadina continuously for nearly
6O years, was an invalid during the latter
period of her life, but despite illhealth
was of a bright and cheerful disposition,
and the centre of a large circle of friends.
Her memory up to the last was excellent,
and when in a reminiscent mood, she
would graphically relate exciting or pathe-
tic tales of the early days,Hcr husband
died nearly 21 years ago. Two sons and
two daughters survive—James Tamblyn
(Boulder City, W.A.), Frank (Wallaroo
Mines), and Mesdames T. Hattam and F.
W. Harris (Kadina). There are several
grandchildren.
