93602The death of Mr. George Manhood on
January 30 at the age of 82 years, removes
a pioneer of the Mount Muirhead district.
He arrived in Millicent from Mount (Gam-
bier in tlie early seventies, and followed
the occupation of farmer and grazier on the
game lands ever since. He was one of the
first to cultivate chicory successfully. He
was a member of the district council of
Mount Muirhead. He left a widow, one
son, three daughters and several grand-
children.

93601Mr George .Manhood, whose death oc-
curred at Millicent on January 30 was a
native of King's Linn, Norfolk, England.
He served an apprenticeship on the tram
ing ship, The Fox, and. under Admiral
Best, assisted in the landing of troops
during the Crimean war. He left England
in 1854, in the immigrant ship James Fer-
rie and landed at Port Adelaide. Soon
after his arrival in South Australia he
was married to Miss E. McGilivary, a pas-
senger by the eame boat. Mr. Manhood
remained for a time near Adelaide, but
gradually worked his way to the South
East. Here he was engaged for several
years by Mr. Gall, of Kingston, and after
living in different parts of the South
East he took up land near Millicent in 1880.
Here he engaged in farming and grazing
in which pursuits he met with success
He resided at the same place until his
death. He leaves a widow, four children,
21 grandchildren, and five greatgrandchil-
dren. Although of a retiring disposition.
Mr. Manhood was known to many as a
genuine and kind-hearted friend.
