OBITUARY

Mr. Ephraim Steen Bates, one
of the oldest residents of Kangaroo
Island, died at Kingscote Hos-
pital. Born in England in
September, 1854, he came to
Australia in 1858. After two
years in Victoria the family set-
tled on Kangaroo Island. As a
young man Mr. Bates joined the
Light Service. Returning to Kan
garoo Island, he married Elizabeth
Ann Davidson. There were eight
children, of whom six survive. For
several years Mr Bates, who be
gan farming after his marriage,
served in the Dudley District Coun
cil. He was chairman for some
years. He was probably the oldest
Justice of the Peace at the time
of his death, and was made an
honorary member of the Justices'
Association on his 91st birthday.
