OBITUARYMr. Ephraim Steen Bates, oneof the oldest residents of KangarooIsland, died at Kingscote Hos-pital. Born in England inSeptember, 1854, he came toAustralia in 1858. After twoyears in Victoria the family set-tled on Kangaroo Island. As ayoung man Mr. Bates joined theLight Service. Returning to Kangaroo Island, he married ElizabethAnn Davidson. There were eightchildren, of whom six survive. Forseveral years Mr Bates, who began farming after his marriage,served in the Dudley District Council. He was chairman for someyears. He was probably the oldestJustice of the Peace at the timeof his death, and was made anhonorary member of the Justices'Association on his 91st birthday.
