101034LATE MR. 0. S. MADD0CKS,Collector of Customs.'Mr. Oswald Septimus Maddocks, ofButler street, Albion, who had held theposition of Collector of Customs,Queensland, for the past five years ormore, died at 12.30 a.m. to-day (asannounced in our first edition), afteran illness extending over severalmonths. In December last, Mr. Mad-docks's condition was giving so muchconcern that he was granted sickleave, hut his health at no time im-proved, and he continued to lingeruntil his death. He leaves a widowand grown-up family of one son andtwo daughters. One of his daughtersis now Mrs. W. Isles, of Beaudesert.Tlie late Mr. Maddocks was born atWaverley, Sydney, on 23rd December.1860, and was, therefore, in his 59thyear. He had had a long and dis-tinguished career in the Federal Cus-toms Department, and during his ser-vlce with tho department, he visitedevery port in Australia at which thereis a customs house. He was ap-pointed subinspector at Broken Hill in1888, and he occupied a slmilar position at Willyama from 1890 to 1906,when he was transferred to Sydney,where he was inspector till June, 1911.He was then appointed collector ofcustoms in West Australia, and inJanuary, 1911, lie was selected for alike position in Queensland, a positionwhich he held until his death. Hewould have retired on pension on 9thJune of the present year.The funeral takes place ant the Too-wong cemetery on Saturday.
