104890 MR. WILLIAM GILLIES.
A correspondent of the "Advertiser"
writes: - At the Tatia
ra MemorialHospital on the first day of 1926 Mr.William Gillies, a very old resident ofthe Tatiara district, passed to thegreat beyond. Mr. Gillies was the se-cond son of Mr. J. Gillies, an earlysettler of' Teetree Gully, from whichdistrict he migrated when but twoyears of age, travelling by bullock drayin short stages and landing in MountGambler 81 years ago. Mr. Gilliesearly recollections dated back to MountGambler when the township was no-thing but scrub and a few log shanties.Mr. Gillies followed bush pursuits, andit is doubtful if a better bush carpen-ter, woodsman, road maker, and bladeshearer was ever known in the South -East. It could truly be said that Mr.Gillies helped to blaze tho trail as faras the South-Eastern districts areconcerned, some of the first hewnsleepers that carried the railway beingcut by his hands. There are manywool sheds, wells, and buildingsthroughout the Tatiara district thatare standing as monuments to hisbushcraft. The last work accomplish-ed by him was a pair of cart wheelsmade not more than a month ago, which would have done credit to ayoung craftsman. An old injury as-serted itself a few days ago and Mr.Gillies sank at the age of 83. Thefamily consisted of Mr. Robert Gillies,Mundallu, Messrs. Jim and Jack Gilliesof Bordertown, Mr. William Gillies andFrank Gillies, of Narracoorte, and Mrs.G. Hillier, of Kieth. There are 21grandchildren and 33 great-grandchil-dren. Four grandsons went to theGreat War and two made the supremesacrifice.
