ocksWithin a few days of his 79th birthday Mr. Thomas Gravestocks, ofForeetville, another pioneer of theBalaklava district, died recently, ar-riving from England in August, 1874,in 'The City of Adelaide' he wasnearly drowned, when that ship wentaground between Hallett's Cove andNoarlunga in a storm. He went to hisuncle at Mount Templeton to learnfarming for two years, thence for twoor three years to his cousin atSnowtown. He went to the city andbought a horse and dray and cartedstone from the Glen Osmond quarriesfor Hill & Co.'s buildings in Piriestreet Then he carted on the PortWakefield to Kadina railway. He didwell there for some months, till thewater gave out. Then he went to Bagot'sWell to cart for the building of the railway from Kapunda to Eudunda tillthat was finished. After furtherfarm life with his uncle, he took upland at Whitwarta. and started farmins- for himself. There he marriedand stayed till 1909, when, through eyetrouble, he sold out and retired toForestville. Mr. Gravestocks had previously taken up land for his sons, atParrakie before the Pinnaroo line wasbuilt, and up till the last three or fouryears he spent a good deal of his timethere. He had been a Rechabite for48 years. His wife died thirteen yearsago. A son and three daughters sur-vive, also eleven grandchildren.
