Mr. T. Graveslocks
Within a few days of his 79th birth
day Mr. Thomas Gravestocks, of
Foreetville, another pioneer of the
Balaklava district, died recently, ar-
riving from England in August, 1874,
in 'The City of Adelaide' he was
nearly drowned, when that ship went
aground between Hallett's Cove and
Noarlunga in a storm. He went to his
uncle at Mount Templeton to learn
farming for two years, thence for two
or three years to his cousin at
Snowtown. He went to the city and
bought a horse and dray and carted
stone from the Glen Osmond quarries
for Hill & Co.'s buildings in Pirie
street Then he carted on the Port
Wakefield to Kadina railway. He did
well there for some months, till the
water gave out. Then he went to Bagot's
Well to cart for the building of the rail
way from Kapunda to Eudunda till
that was finished. After further
farm life with his uncle, he took up
land at Whitwarta. and started farm
ins- for himself. There he married
and stayed till 1909, when, through eye
trouble, he sold out and retired to
Forestville. Mr. Gravestocks had pre
viously taken up land for his sons, at
Parrakie before the Pinnaroo line was
built, and up till the last three or four
years he spent a good deal of his time
there. He had been a Rechabite for
48 years. His wife died thirteen years
ago. A son and three daughters sur-
vive, also eleven grandchildren.
