Mr. Johann Theodore Wohlers, 80,
who died recently, was born at Ham
burg, Germany. On leavin
g school hewas apprenticed in one of the leadingnurseries in Hamburg to learn gardening. After finishing his apprenticeship be travelled on the Continent toobtain experience in his trade, workingat Dresden, Munich, Stuttgart, Frankfort, the Botanical Gardens at Geneva,Switzerland, Paris, and Vitry sur Seine.In 1883 he landed at Port Adelaide. Forabout 30 years he was head gardenerfor the late Mr. Henry Scott at his summer residence, Mount Lofty. In 1916he went to live at Kensington. He wasa Druid, and also took a great interestin Freemasonry, being a past master, amember of Emulation Lodge, Norwood,a member of Emulation Royal Archand Mark Lodge, and the Ark Mariners'Lodge No. 1. He married in 1887 Bertha,daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hamann, Tanunda. He left a widow, fourchildren—Anna, Oscar (Melbourne),Emma, and Hugo—and three grandchildren. His remains were interred in theNorth road Church of England Cemetery.
