DEATH OF
DISTRICT
PIONEER
One of the best known men in
public life in the Richmond dis
trict, Mr. Joseph Grigg Snow, died
at Bangalow yesterday, aged 83
years.
Mr. Snow was associated with
practically every public organisation
in the Bangalow district. He
served as a councilor for Byron
Shire continuously for 25 years. He
was president on several occasions,
retiring at the last election three
years ago.
Other public organisations with
which he was associated over a long
period included the Bangalow A.
and I. Society, of which he was a
committeeman for 15 years, and a
past president. He was secretary
of the Bangalow P. and C. Associ-
ation continuously for about 15
years, and a foundation member of
Bangalow Bowling Club.

He was keen
ly interested in
the Rocky
Creek water
supply scheme,
and was one of
the first mem-
bers of the
council formed
to further this
project.
Born in Lis-
more, Mr. Snow
was one of the
earliest selectors
of land in the
Dunoon district,
and later was
associated with
the sawmilling
industry, his
father being one
of the first sawmill owners on the
North Coast.
Fifty years ago, he settled in
Bangalow where he conducted a
sawmill until his retirement some
years ago. Most of his sons have
also been connected with the tim-
ber industry.
He was married in 1893 and was
predeceased by his wife about seven
years ago. He is survived by a
family of 12—eight sons and four
daughters. Sons are Messrs.
Cecil (Murwillumbah), Edgar
(Maitland), Leslie (Victoria),
Harry (Bangalow), Arthur (Mul-
lumbimby), Raymond (Coffs Har-
bour) and Stanley (Sydney).
Daughters are Mesdames S. M.
Partridge (Bangaiow), M. Dundas
(Binna Burra), J. Chalmers (Bris-
bane) and M. Francis (Sydney). A
brother, Mr. Andrew Snow, of Ty
agarah, also survives him.
A keen bowler, the late Mr. Snow
was a strong supporter of the Ban-
gaiow Club. On the occasion of
his 80th birthday, his sons and
daughters presented him with a
shield, which he donated to the
club. Known as the J. G. Snow
Memorial Shield, it is competed for
annually on Diggers' Day.
He was an early member of the
Lismore Church of Christ and a
foundation member at Bangalow.
