MENDS.— At his son-in-law's (Mr. Mazey) resi-

dence, North Croydon, Robert Mends, late of the
Burra, after a painful illness, in his 82nd year.

Mr. Robert Mends, who died recently

at the residence of his daughter (Mrs.
W. A. Mazey, North Croydon, was
born in London on July 21, 1824, and he
received a university education. When
seventeen years of age he obtained a com-
mission as ensjgn in H.M. 99th Foot Regi-
ment, and in a short time with his regi-
ment he went to Sydney, Major Last being
commanding officer. A few months later,
with a detachment of his regiment, he went
to Norfolk Island, and remained there for
about nine years, and was promoted to a
senior lieutenancy. He returned to Lon-
don in 1851 and sold his commission. Sub-
sequently he went to Western Australia,
where an uncle was Deputy Commissary
General. On \leaving the West he came
to South Australia, and in February, 1853,
i obtained employment under Mr. F. H. Dut-
ton at Anlaby. After working on the
I station for ten years he went to Victoria,
and a year later returned to South Aus-
tralia and opened schools at the Burra
and Robertstown. Fortune smiled on him,
as he received a legacy from England
which placed him in an independent posi-
tion, and he removed to Prospect, where he
lived in retirement sixteen years. For the
last twelve months he had been at North
Croydon. In June last he received news
from England that he was one of thirteen
beneficiaries of a sum of money that had
been in Chancery since 1851, and his share
came to hand six weeks ago. For the
last month he had been confined to hi»
room. He left two daughters-Mrs. W. A.
Mazey, with whom he had lived for a num-
ber of years, Mrs. J. Rowe, of Port Pirie—
one son (Mr. James Mends, of Adelaide),
and one grandchild.
