MR. HARRY PERTZEL
One more link with the past
history of Henty was broken in
the early hours of Monday
morning last, when John Henry
(Harry) Pertzel passed peace-
fully away at the home of his
daughter, Mrs. G. L. Foley, at
the great age of 93 years.
Deceased, who is believed to
be the oldest resident in Henty
and district, was born on 17th
October, 1860, at Byaduck, near
Hamilton, Victoria. At the age
of twelve years he moved with
his parents to Walla, and in
the year 1890 he married Miss
Susan McFarlane, the marriage
being solemnised at Wagga.
The late Mr. Pertzel and fam-
ily lived in the Yerong Creek
and Pleasant Hills districts for
many years, and later settled in
Henty, where he opened a small
shop in Keightley Street, but
later resumed his former oc-
cupation of farm labourer,
which he carried on until the
weight of years began to tell
on him. He retained his phy-
sical and mental alertness until
The wife of deceased died on
1st October, 1932. The mar-
riage was blessed with twelve
children, six sons and six
daughters, all but one of whom
are still living. The sons are:
Walter (Sydney), Charles, Bert
and Gordon (Henty), and Cecil
(Melbourne); daughters, Mabel
(Mrs. T. Walsh, Henty), Al-
vena (Mrs. L. Grass, Melb.),
Ruby (Mrs. Cox, Kerang, Vic),
Gertie (Mrs. G. Foley, Henty),
Freida (Mrs. Myer, New Zea-
land), and Flo (Mrs. E. Keller,
Albury).
In addition, the deceased is
mourned by two surviving bro-
thers (Frank, Wagga, and
Rudolph, Sydney), and three
sisters (Lydia, Sydney, Clare
and Tillie, Albury). There
were 21 children in the family.
He is also survived by 40
grandchildren and 23 great
grandchildren.
Mortal remains of the de-
ceased were interred in the
Henty cemetery on Tuesday
morning, Pastor R. Peach of-
ficiating at Zion Church and
at the graveside. The funeral
arrangements were in the hands
of Mr. E. Cochrane. Pall
bearers were Messrs. C. Pertzel,
B. Pertzel; G. Pertzel (sons),
J. Mason, K. Homer, R. Pert-
zel, and the flowers were car-
ried by Messrs. S. Pertzel, L.
Foley, T. Walsh, Q. Twartz, M.
Knobel, O. Mullen.
