Mr. J. F. W. Thiele, a very old colo-
nist, died recently at Salem, near Cal-
lington. He was born Germany on
July 22,1837. and came to Australia, with
his parents in 1853. For abont 70 years
be had resided in the Bremer district. In
1862 - he married Miss Johanna Louise
Thiele. of Hahndorf. When he first went
to the district be was employed as
a shepherd, and had to camp in a bul-
lock dray at night by the sheep to keep
the wild dogs away. He later worked for
Mr. Gottlob Jaensch, of Ambleside, driving
bullock ia a plough, and carting
wool to Adelaide. After some time he
secured land, and carried on farming ope-
rations, By care, and industry he became
possessed of a considerable area of valuable
conntry, which be worked till 1916
when be confined himself to sheep raising.
He disposed of all his land a few
months before his death. Not
withstanding bis advanced years he had
fairly good health till July
of last year, when he sustained a stroke.
After few a weeks he could get about
until March 16 when he sustained a second stroke,
from the effects of which he did not recover.
He left a widow six sons (Messers A. R. Thiele (Tanunda),
F.W. Thiele (Wodonga), and E.T., F. G. R., F. H., and J. F. Thiele
(Callington), and three daughters ( Mesdames F.
J Thiele, G Puls and B. Samuel. There are 49
grandchildren
