ARY.Mr. Arthur Payne Skurray, 89, whodied recently at the Hutchinson hos-pital, Gawler, was born in Englandand came to South Australia when, hewas five years old with his mother,two brothers and a sister, in the shipAmur in 1851. His father had ar-rived two years earlier with two- oldersons, in the ship Calcutta. The eldestson, John, remained in England. Mr.Arthur Skurray was the youngest andlast of the family of the late Mr. andMrs. C. F. Skurray. Settling first atAdelaide, the family lived there for atime and then moved lo Mt. Barker,and from there as a youth Mr. Skurray came to Gawler and learned thetrade of blacksmith and wheelwrightat the machine shop of the late Mr.T. J. Mankey, afterwards setting upon his own account in Gawler, wherehe remained for 30 years. DuringMr. Skurray's residence he used togo out on shooting trips. He was anefficient marksman. Fishing was another of his favorite sports. FromGawler the family went to CockatooValley. Mr. Skurray put up a shopon the main road and continued inthis business for 40 years. A windmill made by him was exhibited at theGawler Show. He had natural musi-cal ability, and played for dances afparties both in Gawler and later atCockatoo Valley. He made his ownmusical instrument, the Dulcimer, andwhen over 80 years played music atthe 21st birthday party of Miss Kath-leen Skurray of Wasleys, one of hisgranddaughters. Mr. Skurray mar-ried Martha Jane Barter, who alsowas born in England, and was theyoungest daughter of the late Mr.and Mrs. J. C. Barter; she died sevenyears ago, as did two daughters. Thesurviving members of the family areMesdames E. Dunstan (Cockatoo Val-ley), J. W. Taplin (Glenelg), W.Teusner (Port Pirie), and W. Hinton(Quorn), and sons W. A. Skurray(Wasleys), G. H. Skurray (NorthGawler), Alfred Skurray (Croydon),and Clement Skurray -Cockatoo Valley). There are several grandchildrenand three great grandchildren.The community in general and Gawler West Methodist circuit in particular has been moved by the tragicallysudden death of the Rev. FrankEvans, who was killed in a collisionon the Adelaide Hills. Landing fromhis ship in Port Pirie penniless a fewbrief years ago, this young Englishman sought work at the smelters butwas under age. He tramped towardAdelaide and on the way was given alift on a motorbike. The owner tookto the likeable lad and offered him a£1 note. Frank Evans would onlyaccept it as a loan, and the first payhe earned saw the £1 posted to thisnew friend. He won his way upward,distinguished himself at Wesley College, and on the death of the Rev.Ray Rooney was selected to fill thegap at Gawler West, till Conferencemet. The Conference gave him Ka-roonda as a first appointment. He hadonly fairly begun here when the un-happy accident cut short his promisingministry. On the suggestion of theRev. D. T. Reddin the congregationat Gawler West stood in silent tributelast Sunday night.
