OBITUARY.

The death of Mrs. Sarah Jane Smitham,
at the residence of her son, on August  
12, removed another old and respected
resident from the Penfield district. The    
deceased was 81 years of age. Born at
Adelaide in 1841, she, when 14, went to
Penfield with her parents, the late Mr.
and Mrs. William Hill. She married  
Mr. William Smitham in 1861, and he
predeceased her by 14 years. Mrs.
Smitham was proud of the fact that she  
had been able to rear her family of six
sons and six daughters to manhood and    
womanhood. The war caused the only
break among the children. The youngest
son, Mr. C. G. Smitham, was killed in
action in France in 1917. The surviving
members of the family are: — Messrs. W.
A. Smitham (Penfield), S. Smitham (Hind
marsh), John Smitham (Dudley Park),
George Smitham (Port Adelaide), and E.
Smitham (Ethelton), and Mesdames
George Caurse (Penfield), H. Dayman
(Walkerville), A. Dayman (Salisbury), W.
Clasom (Hindmarsh), and C. Stow (Pros-
pect), and Miss E. Smitham (Adelaide).  
There are 29 grandchildren, who include
the two Dayman's, the well-known Port
Adelaide and interstate footballers. The
great-grandchildren total 13.
