References and Notes

[1] In various records the ship is referred to as the Malvina Vidal, the Malvine Vidal and the Malvina Videl.
[2] Believed to be Carl Adolf Theodore Berkholz and his wife Maria Christiana nee Hinneberg (formerly Lehmann) and three children from previous Maria Christiana's marriage [Friedrich Heinrich (born 1838), Christoph Heinrich (born 1843) and Rosina Wilhelmina Hinneberg (born 1845)].  The family travelled to Adelaide by steamer after arrival.  Maria Christiana's brother was Johann Gottlieb Lehmann who was living in Hoffnungsthal.
[3] Mentioned as cabin passenger in Argus newpaper report.
[4]  Data from Convictions - Australian Shipping 1788-1968 webpage.
[5]  Data from Marine Births, Deaths and Marriages. Victoria 1853-1920.  Spellings are those in the CD index.  With the exception of Lehmann none of the children or their parents appear in the Victoian PRO list.  They may have been born to passengers to Sydney.  Precise birth dates not given in index.
[6]  Data from Marine Births, Deaths and Marriages. Victoria 1853-1920.  Spellings are those in the CD index.
[7]  Excerpt from Darren Watson "The Trials of a Gold Rush Immigration Officer".  In Ancestor, Quarterly Journal of the Genealogical Society of Victoria Vol. 25, No. 7.  also oublished on the web.

"The Immigration Officers of the Colony of Victoria were vigilant in enforcing these Acts, and in 1854 alone thirty-nine prosecutions were instituted against ship's Masters for infringements. The financial penalties could be stiff, as Captain Yachtman of the 'Malvina Vidal' would have acknowledged, having through one of these prosecutions been fined almost £500 for supplying unwholesome provisions to his passengers. He had, doubtless, run afoul of one of the three Assistant Immigration Officers operating from Williamstown that year: John Wilkins, Charles Broad and George Ashton."
[8]  Two of the crew of the Malvina Vidal, Henry Dudley and James Thompson, were charged in separate cases with being absent without leave. Dudly was sentenced to four weeks and Thompson seven days.  See - Convictions - Australian Shipping 1788-1968.
[9]  Belived to be Christian Fladrich, wife, Maria nee Lehmann, and daughter, Johanna.
