Biography
Harold was the son of James and Annie Ursula Moad, nee Oates, and was born at Dudley, William Street, Orange, N.S.W. on 27th October, 1920, and was baptised at "Fairfield" on 5th November,1921.

He spent his early years at "Fairfield" with his parents and family: Millicent Mary (Millie), James Kenneth (Ken), Arthur Roy (Roy) and Ursula Elizabeth (Bessie), and attended the Millthorpo Public School and then the Orange High School. The school years covered the period 1925 to 1935.

He then worked on his father's farm, consisting of"Oatliegh", where Ken and Elsie lived after their marriage in 1931, (320 ac.), "Fairfield" where Roy and Madge lived after their marriage in 1936, (304 ac.) and "Taylors" which was without a house, (420 ac.). Thus, 1044 acres altogether.

Father (Dad) and mother (Mum) and Millie lived at "Spring Grove" (40 ac) on the Orange Road from Millthorpe, which belonged to Mum and the two girls. Bessie was away nursing. ~

Harold joined the Millthorpe Troop, 6th Light Horse Regiment, in 1938, and enlisted in the A.I.F. in 1940, serving with the 2/17 Field Battery of 2/9 Australian Army Field Regiment in the Middle East and in Dutch New Guinea. His father died on 1st January, 1943 and on 29th November,1944 he married Wanda Elisabeth Lehmann, daughter of Wilhelm Conrad and Louise Hulda Lehmann, nee Henschke, of Angaston S.A. The marriage took place at St. Petri Lutheran Church in Nuriootpa, S.A.

He inherited a part of "Taylors" (176 ac.) plus some money. There was no house on the property, so after discharge from the A.I.F. on the 12th November, 1945, he lived with Mum and Millie at "Spring Grove" for a few years. And then went into partnership with Roy on the farm before deciding to build.

When ready to commence building, Harold and Wanda moved out to the property and living first in a borrowed caravan and then in a tent, commenced preparing the foundations, with Wanda making cement bricks for their house. A bulldozer became bogged near the building site and from then on they called the property "Bogadozer". As soon as the garage was built they moved into it to live.

As the building of his house was taking up too much time, Harold dissolved the partnership with Roy. On the 19th May, 1949, he became a father by the birth of his son Christopher.

Harold's mother, Annie Ursula Moad died on the7th March 1952; and his son Graeme was born on 25th June of the same year. They were at that time still living in the garage but were able to move into their house soon after.

As they felt their property was just a bit too small, Harold tried unsuccessfully to buy adjoining, or nearby land. And when Robin Oates made an offer for "Bogadozer" he felt it was a good one and sold out.

They left N.S.W. after Christmas 1958 and moved to South Australia for the New Year 1959, and spent six months looking around for properties, but thought land was too dear: so ended up buying a small general store at Palmer.

While there, brother Ken died on 30th June, 1962, and their third child, Kathryn Joy was born on the 27th July of the same year.

Time went by, then, for various reasons, things began to change. Small businesses in small towns became not worth having. Palmer Four Square Store was put on the market, but nobody wanted it. The freehold was eventually sold and stock disposed of, but the sale fell through: that was in 1969.

Board was being paid out for the two boys, Christopher going to Teachers College and Graeme to Adelaide Boys High. Rather than re-stock the shop, they rented a house and went to Adelaide.

Harold began looking for work and within a week found a position as caretaker at the University of Adelaide.

Wanda, being used to working in the shop as well as doing the housekeeping, found she had too much time with too little to do, so started doing housework for others, going out for a couple of hours, two or three mornings a week.

The property at Palmer was eventually sold in 1971 and Harold was then able to get a War Service Loan, which he could'nt do while still owning a house. They then bought their present home at Hawthorn.

Unfortunately, in March 1975, Wanda had to go to hospital with Leukaemia, where she died on Mother's Day; 11th May 1975.

Harold Edward Moad is still an employee of the University of Adelaide. A security Attendant since 19th March, 1984, but has been on leave since 23rd March 1984 and until mid July; at which time he intends to retire
