56521One of the oldest and most respected re
sidents of Sutherlands died on October 18
in the person of Mr.
David French. He
was a son of the late Mr. Isaac
French,
and was a native of Gloucestershire. He
arrived in this colony witlh his father
in the Lady Empm in 1838, and
commenced fanning operations at Sheaoak
Log, afterwards removing to Freeling,
where he carried on a butchering business
in conjunction with fanning. About eigh-
teen years ago Mr.
French went to Morgan,
where he was engaged in fanning for five
or six years, when he went to reside near
Sutherlands, where he died at the age of
sixty-five. He was a man of an original
turn of mind, and considerable independ
ence and force of character. He has left
a widow, six sons, and four daughters.
