Mrs. French, whose death 'was
reported on January 23, was an old
colonist of South Australia. She was
born at Dawlish, County Devon, in
1836, and arrived at Port Adelaide in
the sailing ship David Malcolm with
her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. Angel,
in April, 1849, after a voyage of three
months. Her parents travelled by bul
lock dray to their first home in Ade
laide, which was situated on the South
road. Edwardstown, near the Avoca
Hotel. They later purchased a farm
at Freeling,, and it was here that she
met her future husband, Mr. David
French, to whom she was married at
St. George's Church, Gawler, by Canon
Coombes in 1856. The couple took up
land at Sheoak Log, where they en
gaged in farming. Mr. French was
also interested in a butchering business
at Freeling. At a later date Mr. French
took up land near Eudunda and Suther
lands. He died in 1899, and his widow
23 years ago decided to retire and came
to Adelaide to live with her daughter
and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J. H.
Moeller, of Norwood. Mrs. French was
active up to the time of her death, and
took a great interest in reading. There
were 13 children of the marriage, 11
of whom survive her. There are also
37 grandchildren and 19 greatgrand
children. Mrs. French leaves a sister
and a brother, who are respectively 93
and 90 years of age.
