THE LATE MR. PAUL LAWSON.
A WORTHY COLONIST.
Mr. Paul Lawson who for 40
years, had resided at Santo Vale, near
Wirrabara, passed away at his resi-
dence, Prospect, last week. The
deceased was born near Copenhagen in
Danmark, on November 4, 1845.
When about 18 years of age he
secured a berth of a vessel which,
shortly after leaving 1 ft port, was
wrecked in the North Sea. All of tne
crew were rescued, however, and Mr
Lawson promptly embarked on
another ship, Eventually he found
himself on a liner steamer trading to
New Orleans, in the United States of
America, where he witnessed many
exciting incidents, and personally par-
ticipate in several stirring adven-
tures, including blockade running
during the American Civil War.
Toward the end of that conflict he
returned to Denmark, and a few
mouths later sailed for South Australia
in the ship Malta. He arrived at
Port Adelaide on January 1, 1863.
For sime time he stayed in the
neighbotrhood cf Gawler River, but
in 1869 took up land at Whitwarta
and Port WakefieId. ln the following
year he mairied Johanna Elanora
Kuhndt, and 12 months afterwards
processed northward on a dam sinking
expedition. He claimed to have been
tlie first man who went north of Port
Augusta, with a plough and scoop
making dams fer the squatters. Two
of the stations on which he worked
were Euro Bluff and Yadna Mulka.
Thence he returned south, and finally
Bettlod at Santo Vale, where as a
result of indefatigable labour, remark-
able strength, great resourcefulness,
and exceptional mechanical versatility
he built up a splendid property of
which he remained in possession until
nearly 18 months ago, when he sold
out and retired to Barker road.
Prospect. While at Santo Vale Mr
Lawson made a special study of the
Dorset Horn sheep, and gradually
developed a capital flock, including a
number of choice stud animals. He
Was also a warm admirer of the Jersey
Cow, and his herd was one of the best
in the north, As a member of tbe
Wlrrabara branch of the Agricultural
Bureau for many years he performed
much useful service. Besides a widow
the deceased has left a son — Mr.
Harold Lawson, of Prospect — and
four danghtors — Mesdames Arthur
Wallace, Prospect; Charles Holiitt,
Wjrrabara; H. R. Kelly, Booleroo
Centre, and Miss Peta Lawson,
Prospect.
