A WORTHY COLONIST.
Mr. Paul Lawson who for 4
0years, had resided at Santo Vale, nearWirrabara, passed away at his resi-dence, Prospect, last week. Thedeceased was born near Copenhagen inDanmark, on November 4, 1845.When about 18 years of age hesecured a berth of a vessel which,shortly after leaving 1 ft port, waswrecked in the North Sea. All of tnecrew were rescued, however, and MrLawson promptly embarked onanother ship, Eventually he foundhimself on a liner steamer trading toNew Orleans, in the United States ofAmerica, where he witnessed manyexciting incidents, and personally par-ticipate in several stirring adven-tures, including blockade runningduring the American Civil War.Toward the end of that conflict hereturned to Denmark, and a fewmouths later sailed for South Australiain the ship Malta. He arrived atPort Adelaide on January 1, 1863.For sime time he stayed in theneighbotrhood cf Gawler River, butin 1869 took up land at Whitwartaand Port WakefieId. ln the followingyear he mairied Johanna ElanoraKuhndt, and 12 months afterwardsprocessed northward on a dam sinkingexpedition. He claimed to have beentlie first man who went north of PortAugusta, with a plough and scoopmaking dams fer the squatters. Twoof the stations on which he workedwere Euro Bluff and Yadna Mulka.Thence he returned south, and finallyBettlod at Santo Vale, where as aresult of indefatigable labour, remark-able strength, great resourcefulness,and exceptional mechanical versatilityhe built up a splendid property ofwhich he remained in possession untilnearly 18 months ago, when he soldout and retired to Barker road.Prospect. While at Santo Vale MrLawson made a special study of theDorset Horn sheep, and graduallydeveloped a capital flock, including anumber of choice stud animals. HeWas also a warm admirer of the JerseyCow, and his herd was one of the bestin the north, As a member of tbeWlrrabara branch of the AgriculturalBureau for many years he performedmuch useful service. Besides a widowthe deceased has left a son — Mr.Harold Lawson, of Prospect — andfour danghtors — Mesdames ArthurWallace, Prospect; Charles Holiitt,Wjrrabara; H. R. Kelly, BoolerooCentre, and Miss Peta Lawson,Prospect.
