MR. ELLIS LINFORD NORMAN.
The death occurred on December 5
of an old and respected pioneer resi-
dent of Yahl, in the person of Mr.
Ellis Linford Norman. Mr. Norman
had been in failing health for about
eight months, but it was only during
the last fortnight that he was confined
to his bed.
Mr. Norman was born in Lockport,
New York State, America, in June,
1853 ; he was thus in his 81st year.
He was a son of the late Mr. and
Mrs. David Norman Sen., and he left
America in the sailing ship "Burling-
ton" for Australia as a lad of 12
years. After a voyage of four months
the family landed at Port Adelaide in
1865. They left Adelaide for Mount
Gambier in December, 1866, and on
their arrival in this district they
settled at Yahl, and there he lived
until his death.
He was a devoted member of the
Methodist Church, and occupied vari-
ous ofiices in connection with the Yahl
church. He was also a member of
the Rechabite Lodge. He was twice
married. His first wife was Miss
Mary MacArthur, of O.B. Flat, whom
he married in 1876, and his second
wife, who survives him, was Miss
Christina Henningsen, of Yahl, whom
he married in 1897. He had a family
of ten, seven by his first wife and
three by his second. They are Mes-
danies Murton, Kingscote; M. G.
Morris, Adelaide; R. Nicholson, Mt.
Gambier; A. Whitehead, Yahl; E.
Jacquelin, Mount Gambier; and Miss
Madge Norman, Yahl; Messrs. S. H.,
D. D., Mount Gambier; L. E., Gipps-
land; and R. H., Yahl. Mr. S. L.
Norman, Glenelg, and Mr. H. A. Nor-
man, Glenhuntly, Victoria, are bro-
thers; and Mrs. I. Pasfield, Mount
Gambier, and Mrs. J. Lean, Adelaide,
are sisters. The late Mrs. Marcus
Collins, Geelong, was a sister. One
daughter, Ruth, predeceased him. He
leaves 58 grandchildren and 11 great-
grandchildren. The funeral, which
was conducted on Wednesday last, was
largely attended. The Rev. J. H.
Davies conducted the funeral service,
and Mr. W. Pearce carried out the
mortuary arrangements.
