OBITUARY


Mrs. C. L. Spehr

Mrs: C. L. Spehr, who died
recently in Mount Gambier at the
age of 76, Was the eldest daughter
of the late Mr. W. B. Shepherd-
son (for many, years town clerk  
of Mount Gambier) and a grand-
daughter of Mr. J. B. Shepherd-
son., an 1836 pioneer, who was the
first school master in the colony
and subsequently a magistrate.
In her younger days Mrs. Spehr
was actively connected with the  
Methodist Church and for some
years was a Sunday School or-
ganiser. When her late husband
became Mayor of Mount Gambier,
a position he held for 5 years,
during which the town made
much progress, she took a keen
interest in public affairs. She
founded the District Aid Society
which rendered assistance to per
sons in poor circumstances, and
was prominently associated with
Red Cross work. She was also
President of the women's branch
of: the Liberal and Country
League.
She leaves three sons, Banks,
Garth and Nevill Spehr, and is
survived by two sisters, Mrs. A.
W. Goymour and Miss Alice  
Shepherdson . Three brothers,  
William, Bert and Arthur Shep-
herdson, and one sister, Marian
pre-deceased her.
