OBITUARY.

Mr. W. B. Shepherdson.-After a long
illness, Mr. William Bosenworth Shep-
hersdon, Town Clerk of Mount Gambier,
passed away at his residence, North
Gambier, early on Thursday afternoon.
For several years he suffered from heart
disease, and during the last two years
was subject to periods of acute illness,
divided by periods of camparative
health. For the greater part of the
present year he was incapacitated from
from following his avocation, and was
granted repeated leaves of absence by
the Town Council and District Council
of Mount Gambier West, whose clerk he
also was. For a short time in May and
June he superintended the delivery and
laying down of the black metal in the
streets, but was then laid up again, and
since the end of June has been unable to
leave his house. In addition to heart
disease consequent dropsy set in, and
Mr. Shepherdson's constitution broke up.
The end came, as stated, on Thursday.
The deceased gentleman was the youngest
son of the late Mr. J. B. Shepherdson,
S.M., who was for many years stationed
at Wallaroo and other parts of the
state. He was an Australian native,
having been born at Mount Barker on
May 24, 1841, the same year in which
the King was born, and was thus 67
years of age. After leaving school he
Went to Melbourne, where he remained
for four years, and he came to Mount
Gambier in 1862. For 14 years after
he came here he was engaged in various
occupations, amongst which was mana-
ger for Messrs. Fidler & Webb at the
Millicent drainage works for two years.
He was mainly occupied in book-keeping
and accountancy, in which he was highly
qualified. When Mr. W. W. Watson, the
first Town Clerk of Mount Gambier and
Clerk of Mount Gambler West District
Council fell into weak health, Mr. Shep-
herdson became his assistant, and when
he died in 1876 he was appointed his
successor, both as Town Clerk of the
Corporation and Clerk of the Mount

Gambier West Council. Both positions
he retained till this year. A few months
ago he resigned the clerkship of Mount
Gambier West, and his son, Mr. G. A.
Shepherdson, was appointed his succes-
sor. The Town Council have held the
position of Town Clerk open (Mr.. G. A.
Shepherdson acting in the place of his
father), hoping that the Town Clerk
might, after rest, recover his health. The
deceased was a member of the Ancient
Order of Foresters since 1865, passed
through all the chairs in the Order, and
was appointed financial secretary of
Court Marion in 1870. He was noted
for the efficiency, quickness, and abso-
lute thoroughness and accuracy which
characterised everything he did, and his
unassailable integrity. He proved, in
addition to his value as a municipal
officer, a good citizen otherwise, and
was always ready to do what he could
to promote the advancement of the town.
In 1866 he married Miss Moles, daugh-
ter of a resident at Glencoe, and she
survives him. He also leaves two sons
Messrs. George A. and Arthur Shep-
herdson, of Mount Gamhien--and three
daughters--Mrs. C. L. Spehr and the
Misses Kate end Alice Shepherdson, of
this town. The funeral was held yes-
terday afternoon
yesterday afternoon. The Rev. W. H.
Gann conducted the funeral obsequies.
Mr. G. B. Renfrey was funeral director.
