Mr. Wilhelm Ortloff, 86, who died
on May 11. at Tailem Bend, was bom
at Tanunda. He began working when
very young. There were no schools in
the vicinity where he was reared, so
he educated himself, and was able
to read end speak English and German
fluently. When a young man he traded
on the River Murray, between
Blanchetown and Wentworth, but
lost all his stock when his boat was
swamped In the 1870 flood. After a
few years of river life he went to
Moonta. where he worked for the firm
of Smith and Howie, drapers, and
later on his own account. Here in 1875
he married Miss Louisa Nagel, who
died four years ago. He took part in
the early gold rushes to Southern
Cross and Coolgardie, but returned
to Moonta and started farming in the
surrounding districts. At the age of
70 he took up land near Tailem Bend,
and about six and a half years ago he
relinquished it to reside in the town
ship. He was a foundation member
of the Hamley Lodge, M.U., also the
Foresters' Lodge, of Moonta, holding
all the offices in both Orders. He left
