Obituary
Chronicle (Adelaide, SA : 1895 - 1954) Saturday 11 October 191385935

Mrs. Johanna Catherine Tiedemann, of
Balhannah, is a remarkable old lady. She
is 95 years of age, yet walks without a
stick or other assistance, does not wear
glasses, possesses a strong, clear voice, and
knits and crochets as nimbly as a young
woman. The old lady, who is much loved
by the residents, frequently repeats poetry
learned in her schooldays. She was born
at Hamburg, Germany, on March 30. 1819,
and married in 1842. She and her husband
came to South Australia seven years later
30 weeks. The couple first settled at
Black Forest, which was then a dense
scrub, and there were only six houses in
the neighborhood. Mrs. Tiedemann was
once proceeding to Langhorne's Creek in
a dray, when the horse shied and cap-
sized the vehicle. She was pinned between
the vehicle and a trunk of a tree. A
young man released her from her dan-
gerous position. The Victorian djggings
attracted her husband to the neighboring
State, and while he was away his wife
earned her own living at needlework. Mr.
Tiedemann was fairly successful on the
goldfields, and on his return husband and
wife decided to visit Germany. They en-
gaged a berth on a ship and paid the pas-
sage-money. One of the children con-
tracted measles, however, and the captain
declined to carry them or to refund the
money, but after a lot of trouble they got
some of it back. The couple later removed
to Balhannah, where the husband died five
years ago. There were four children, of
whom two survive — Mrs. Lawson. who re-
sides in Victoria, and Mr. Gustave Tiede-
mann, with whom his mother lives. There
are ten grandchildren and five great-grand-
children.
