BLUMBERG.
February 25.— The death is announced «f
Mr. Diedrich Haeveker, of this town, at
the age of 75 years. For 50 of these years
he had been a colonist of this State. He
was born in Bremen, Germany, on De-
cember 25, 1828. At an early age he bad
a great wish for a sea life, and joined a
whaling fleet, which cruised about the
west coast of America. In 1845 his ship
called in at San Francisco, which then was
in its earliest stages. Shortly afterwards
Be returned to his native land, and then
joined at Godefray the ship Riersting. He
arrived in South Australia on October 25,
1854. He visited the Victorian goldfields
at the time of the great rush, but returned
to South Australia and settled at Blum-
berg in 1859. He had resided here almost
continuously since, exeept when he was
landlord of the Napoleon Hotel in
Adelaide, which place of business he
gave up in the year 1880, and took a trip
to his native land. On his return to Blum-
berg he gave much of his time to attending
the needs of Blumberg with a hearty good
will, for which the town owes him a debt
of gratitude. Mr. Haeveker always took a
great interest in politics. He was the pre-
sident of the local institute for a number
of years, and husbanded the resources of
this institute in such a way as to have its
affairs in a healthy condition. Mr. Haeve-
ker was also much sought after by local
athletic clubs, as president. His stories and
reminiscences of the early days were most
interesting to listen to, and he had in his
possession what was probably the first tele-
gram that came through from Adelaide to
Blumberg. About six years ago Mr.
Haeveker met with a rather painful acci-
dent, being thrown out of his phaeton. It
so maimed his right hand that he could
hardly use it, and this affected his health,
in that he was not able to take as much
exercise as formerly. He left a widow and
three daughters (Mrs. Conrad Stunn,
Mrs. Fopp, Mrs. E. Bruggeman), and ten
grandchildren.
