88229 Mr. Emanuel Treasure.
Mr. Emmanuel Treasure, one of the ear
liest settlers at Minlaton, died on June 29.
He was born in Somersetshire in 1820. On
his arrival he settled first at Yankalilla,
where for several years he successfully car
ried on farming and dairying. In 1872 he
removed, with his family, to Yorke's Penin-
sula, and established the farm, three miles
south-east of Minlaton, which he occupied
at the time of his death. The country
when he began was an almost impenetrable
wilderness of tangled mallee and teatree,
and it was only by arduous and incessant
labour that it could be reclaimed and ren
dered fit for the plough. To this exhausting
work Mr. Treasure and his family applied
themselves with unremitting energy and
with so great a measure of success that the
homestead soon grew to be one of the most
comfortable and thriving on the Peninsula.
Until the past few weeks the deceased en
joyed perfect health, and all his faculties
were keen and alert. He was a prominent
member of the Baptist Church. A widow
and 13 children and a large number of
grandchildren and great-grandchildren survive.
