Mrs. Henriette Gerke
The death occurred on February
20th, at Yongala, of Henrietta
Gerke, at the age of 84 years. She
was born at Rosenberg, Prussia, in
1850, and received her education in
that country. Marrying Mr. F. C.
Gerke in 1874 she came to Aus-
tralia on - the ship ,"Hurshell" in
1876. The couple took up land at
Penwortham on their arrival, but
in 1892 moved to Bundaleer (near
Jamestown) where they carried on
the duties of gardeners, until they
retired to Mannanarie in 1922.
While living at Bundaleer Springs,
Mrs. Gerke was a great worker in
assisting those more unfortunate,
many baskets being filled and sent
to people in poor circumstances.
Her goodness was very much
appreciated. Her husband
predeceased her in 1938
and since then Mrs. Gerke had re-
sided with her eldest daughter
(Mrs. A. Spavin) at Yongala, The
deceased was well known and high-
ly respected in the districts where
she lived. She leaves four daughters
Mesdames A. Spavin (Yongala), M.
T. Roche (Peterborough), J. Cullen
(Robe), J, Woolston (St. Peters);
and three sons, Leo (Plympton),
Jack (Peterborough), and Joe
(Maitland), Also 33 grandchildren
and 30 great grandchildren. The
burial took place at Jamestown,
where the Rev. Fr. Toal officiated
at the graveside.
