Mr. Frederick Carl Gerke, of Yongala,
died in the Peterborough Hospital on Sun-
day, at the age of 77 years. He was
born in the village of Needy Churn,
Prussia, on January 22, 1851. He served
his country in the army in the Franco-
Prussian war, and visited the Philippine
Islands, the West Indies, and Spain. He
married Miss Henrietta Zarnick, and with
his wife left Germany
in the ship Hurshell,
and arrived in South Australia in
1877. They resided at Penworthy until
1891, when Mr. Gerke secured a property
at Bundaleer Springs, and made a success
of his venture. In 1917 Mr. Gerke re-
moved to Mannanarie, and later to Yon-
gala, where he lived in retirement. Mr.
and Mrs. Gerke celebrated their golden
wedding four years ago. Mrs. Gerke sur-
vives, and there are seven children living
—Messrs. J. S. Gerke (Peterborough), L.
F. Gerke (Mannanarie), J. A. Gerke
(Bundaleer Springs), and Messrs. A.
Spavin ( Yongala), J. L. Cullen (Robe),
J. Woolston (St. Peters), and M. T.
Roche (Peterborough). There are also
30 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchil-
dren.
