Mrs- Caroline Sappiatzer, a resident
of Millicent for nearly 60 years, died
on Friday, April 21st at the residence
of her daughter, Mrs. C. von Stanke,
of Claraville, Mount Gambier. Three
weeks before her death Mrs.Sappiat-
zer returned to Mount Gambier after
spending a month with relatives at
Millicent. She became ill shortly
afterwards, and was confined to her
bed until death. The late Mrs. Sap-
piatzer was a daughter of the late Mr.
and Mrs. W. Poller of Lobethal (now
Tweedvale), and was born in Hanover,
Germany, on September 21, 1849, ar-
riving in Adelaide twoyears later with
her parents. Spending her girlhood in
Adelaide, she was married to the late
Mr. Martin Sappiatzer in 1872. Shortly
afterwards they settled at Millicent,
where, for many years, Mrs. Sappiat-
zer practised midwifery, her avocation
bringing her into contact with homes
in all parts of the district. The de-
ceased lady was an energetic worker
for St. Paul's Lutheran Church, and
was particularly active in connection
with the mission work of the Church
in New Guinea. Her husband died in
1896, leaving a, large family. The four
sons, are Messrs. H. W., A. H., and F.
C. Sappiatzer, of Millicent, and Mr. M.
G. Sappiatzer, of the Railways Depart-
ment, Adelaide; and there are four
daughters, Mesdames J. Herbst; V.
Pasfield. and C. von Stanke, of Mount
Gambier, and Mrs. R. C. Altachwager,
of Millicent. There are 39 grand-
children and five great-grandchildren.
One daughter died in infancy. A sister
and a brother reside in Adelaide.
The remains were taken to Millicent
and interred in the local cemetery.
Prior to the funeral, a service was
conducted in the Lutheran Chunch by
Pastor E. Sprengel, who conducted
the burial ceremony. The pall bearers
were four grandsons of the deceased,
Messrs. A. Sappiatzer, . W. Herbst, I.
Pasfield, and J. Altschwager. Many
beautiful floral tributes were received
by relatives and friends. Her last ten
years were spent in Mount Gambier.
