Cole died suddenly at his
home, Carlton-parade, Torrensville, on
Friday. He was born at Hope Valley in
1854, and was the second son of the late
Mr. Robert Messiter Cole, "Goodworth."
Rlverton. He was educated at Whin
ham College. In 1875 he went north
with his brother. Robert, who had se
lected land in the hundred of Gregory,
and put in 100 acres of wheat, being the
first farmer to put in wheat on selected
land north of Mount Remarkable. In
September of the same year he selected
land in the hundred of Willochra, "The
Highlands," Wilmington, where he lived.
for 48 years. Mr. Cole took an active
part in public affairs. He was a foun-
dation member of the Beautiful Valley
Agriculture Show committee, and a
member for 20 years. He was a mem-
ber of the Hammond District Council
for many years, and of the Wilmington
School Board and Agricultural Bureau.
He was an active member of Christ
Church, Wilmington, and a warden for
very many years. Mr. Cole took great
interest in the mounted rifles in the
north, and was a company sergeant
major. Owing to Impaired health, he
sold "The Highlands" in 1923 to Mr J
G. Fraser, and secured a home at Tor-
rensville. where he lived a retired life.
His chief hobby was gardening, and his
garden was always an object of admira-
ion. His wife, who was a daughter of
the late Mr. Peter McMartin. or River
ton, died five years ago. There are two
sons and three daughters. Messrs. P. R.
P. Cole, of Wilmington; H. E. Cole, of
Torrensville; Mesdames D. W. Jackson
N. P. Taylor, of Torrensville; and
E. J. Sloman. of Port Adelaide. There
are six grandchildren.
