OBITUARY.

MR. Geo. BRIGHTON.

Another of the early residents of
the Narracoorte district, and one who
had lived here for about half a cen-
tury, in the person of Mr. George
Brighton, passed away at his home
near Narracoorte on March 3 in his
84th year. The deceased, who was
well-known and respected in the
South-East, and had many friends in
this part, was born at Prospect, South
Australia, in 1852. He came to Port
MacDonnell in 1856, and spent his
early years in that part of the South-
East, having learnt the trade of a
baker. In 1877 Mr. Brighton was
married to Miss Mary Corbell, they
being the first couple to be married in
the Allandale church after it was
built. His wife survives him.
The deceased worked on the
construction of the Kingston jetty,
and was the first to cart a load of
wheat from Port Brighton to Port
Pirie, in the northern part of the
State. He had lived in the Narra-
coorte district for 48 years. There
was a family of ten—seven daugh-
ters and three sons, viz., Flora May
(Mrs. G. Munn. of Goodwood), Carrie
(Mrs. W. J. Simpson, of Narracoorte),
Ethel (Mrs. G. Gillies, of Murray
Bridge). Bessie (Mrs. V. G. Hansen,
of Goodwood), Bertha. (Mrs. C. R.
Butler, of Narracoorte), Beatrice
Mrs. S. J Lennard, of Narracoorte),
Gertie (Mrs. K. Baudinette, of Cole-
nine. Vic.); and Messrs. G. Brighton
(Echuca), Percy and W. (Narra-
coorte). There are also 58 grand-
children, and 31 great grandchildren.
The funeral took place on Wednes-
day. March 4. when the remains of
the deceased were laid to rest in the
Narracoorte cemetery, the cortege
comprising a large number of rela-
tives and friends. The Rev. J. J. Kil-
martin conducted the service at the
graveside, and Messrs. Plait Bros,
were in charge of the mortuary ar-
rangements.
