MARTIN TILKA

The tragic death of Martin Tilka, at
the age of 72, which occurred opposite
Mr Cook's blacksmith shop on Mon
day last, removes another of Kanga
roo Island's old residents. The de
ceased, who was proceeding from
Kingscote to his home in Cygnet
River in a dray had to stop at Mr
Cook's for a parcel, and drawing off
the side of the road the wheel of the
vehicle ran into a small washout and
he was thrown head foremost on tbe
road. Those that saw the accident
immediately ran to his assistance, but
life was extinct, his neck being broken
in the fall. Deceased had been a
resident of the Island for about 32
years, and during that time had lived
at Cygnet River, engaged in fruit
growing and farming pursuits. He
was a native of Germany and prior to
arriving in this country had seen
active service in the Franco Prussian
war. Tbe remains were interred in
the Kingscote Cemetery on Wednes
day last, Rev. Turton Longman
officiating at the graveside.
