OBITUARY.Mr. M. Huppatz.Our Riverton correspondent writes:—Mr.Martin Huppatz, one of the patriarchs ofthe little German settlement of Pieter'sHill, died on Tuesday, April 28. For nearlythreescore years the deceased had beenin this district as an agriculturist, andwas highly esteemed for his fine character.Born in Turo, Germany, in 1842, be ar-rived in South Australia with his parentswhen nine years old. After a few yearsspent at Hope Valley, these settlers mi-grated to Pieter's Hill, and became per-manent residents there. The deceasedmarried Miss Kschenka, and both becameclosely identified with the LutheranChurch at Pieter's Hill. Mr. Huppatz atdifferent times filled all the offices in thechurch open to a layman. For severalyears he acted for the eastern portion ofthe district in the Gilbert District Coun-cil. One son (Mr. F. C. Huppatz), who hasthe farm here, and one daughter (Mrs.Deckert, of Netherby, Victoria), and thewidow, survive.
