OBITUARY.

Mr. M. Huppatz.
Our Riverton correspondent writes:—Mr.
Martin Huppatz, one of the patriarchs of
the little German settlement of Pieter's
Hill, died on Tuesday, April 28. For nearly
threescore years the deceased had been
in this district as an agriculturist, and
was highly esteemed for his fine character.
Born in Turo, Germany, in 1842, be ar-
rived in South Australia with his parents
when nine years old. After a few years
spent at Hope Valley, these settlers mi-
grated to Pieter's Hill, and became per-
manent residents there. The deceased
married Miss Kschenka, and both became
closely identified with the Lutheran
Church at Pieter's Hill. Mr. Huppatz at
different times filled all the offices in the
church open to a layman. For several
years he acted for the eastern portion of
the district in the Gilbert District Coun-
cil. One son (Mr. F. C. Huppatz), who has
the farm here, and one daughter (Mrs.
Deckert, of Netherby, Victoria), and the
widow, survive.
