Mr. Hermann Diedrich Mengersen, who
died on Monday, was one of the small band
of German settlers who arrived in the
forties and fifties, and who did so much to
assist in the early pioneering work of the
State. Mr. Mengersen was bom in Bremen
on October 24, 1831. After receiving a
good education he left his native land in the
ship Wandrahm, and arrived in South Aus-
tralia in 1854. He settled at Lobethal,
where for a quarter of a century he carried
on a general storekeeper's business, and was
first postmaster. For many years he had
resided at Kensington. He left two sons
(Mr. Henry Mengersen, auctioneer, of
Palmer, and Mr. Rudolph Mengersen, of
Burnside), six daughters (Mrs. William
Christoph, of Lobethal; Mrs. A. Kasper, of
East Adelaide; Mrs. George Kreusler, of
Medindie; Mrs. William Knick, of Broome,
Western Australia; and the Misses A. and
M. Mengersen), and 11 grandchildren.
