30144DEATH OF AN OLD RESIDENT.-Mrs. Sophia
Plate, relict of the late Mr. J. H. Plate,
farmer, of O.B. Flat, whose death is announced
in our obituary column to-day, was an old
resident of this district. She was born in
Hanover, Germany, 57 years ago, and came
out with her parents when only seven years of
age. She met her late husband in Adelaide,
and was married to him at Edwardstown,
Thirty-two years ago Mr. and Mrs. Plate
came to Mount Gambier, and started farming
at O.B. Flat, where for 15 years Mr. Plate was
one of the leading and most prosperous farmers.
He was accidentally killed 17 years ago through
a fall from a horse, and shortly after the sad
event Mrs. Plate relinquished the farm and
came to the town, where she subsequently
lived quietly till her death on last Wednesday
evening. The deceased lady had been ailing
for about 11 mouths, and the cause of her death
was an internal cancer, which rapidly ran its
course. She was much esteemed by a large
circle of friends for her social worth and genial
disposition, and her kindly and charitable
character endeared her to many others who
will learn of her decease with sorrow. The
deceased lady had a family of 14 children, 12 of
whom--six sons and the same number of
daughters--survive her. Mr. A. J. Plate,
of Mount Gambier, auctioneer, Mr. J.
F. Plate, of Claraville ; and Mr. W.
Plate, of Mount Graham, are sons, and the
others are scattered over Australia. Several
of her daughters resided with her here. The
funeral was held yesterday, and was very
numerously attended. The Rev. F. W.
Matschoss conducted the funeral services.
