On Jan 11 1866 the Hornet sailed from New York for San Francisco via Cape Horn under command of Captain Josiah A. Mitchell, with a cargo of candles and oil in cases and barrels. On 3 May 1866, off the coast of South America, the ship caught fire and sank. The crew left the ship in three boats. On 15 Jun 1866 one longboat with the captain and fourteen men reached the Island of Hawaii some 4000 miles from where the Hornet sank, the two other boats were never heard of again.
