Josiah Stephens
 

Josiah Stephens was born 31 Mar 1817 and baptized 23 June 1819 at All Saints, in Newland, Gloucester (the Cathedral of the Forest).  He was the son of William Stephens and Sarah (nee Pearce).


On 7 August 1851 Josiah married Julianna Rowland at All Saints, in Newland.  Witnesses to the Wedding were Benjamin Stephens and Priscilla Townsend.  The officiating minister was John Poole who was master of the Grammar School.  Priscilla was the daughter of John  and Priscilla Rowland of Compton Dundon in Somerset.  She was born in Compton Dundon in ca 1806.


Juliana died on 22 May 1866 and was buried in Clearwell on 28 May 1866.  Josiah subsequently married Ann Jenkins in March 1867 in Clifton, Bristol.


Josiah’s occupation as stated on his marriage record (1851) was currier.  In the census records his occupation is given as tanner and currier (1851), retired tanner (1861, 1881) and landowner (1871).  Josiah together with his father, William, and brother, Benjamin, operated a Tannery in Clearwell.  The Slater’s Directory for Gloustershire - 1852 contains an entry under Tanners “STEPHENS Josiah & Benj., Clearwell”.  By ca 1871 Josiah had moved to Bristol.


Josiah died in Bishopton, Bristol on 22 December 1886 and was buried in Clearwell on 29 December 1886.
