Only 9 When He Came Out
Mr August Pumpa, 81, of Eden Val-
ley, who died on November 21, spent
most of his life in that district, where
he was widely known and esteemed. He
was only nine when he came there with
his parents in 1866, the family having
come from Germany on the sailing
ship "Sophie," which took 10 weeks for
the voyage. Mr Pumpa was the fifth
and youngest son of Mr and Mrs George
Pumpa, and was born on May 22,
1857, at Drewitz, in Brandenburg, Ger-
many; being christened by Pastor
Krueger.
He wan confirmed by Pastor Appelt,
and on February 26, 1881, he married
Miss Johanne Pauline Gutsche. Of
their five children, one died in infancy,
and on January 2, 1898, Mr Pumpa
was bereft of his wife. On June 4,
1901, he married Mrs Ernestine Paul-
ine Liesfield, nee Ebert, who survives.

the funeral at Eden Valley on Nov
ember 23; the bearers being Messrs
Herm. and H. Hartwig, Ad. and Alb.
Kroehn, J. B. Ihms and Ad. Seeliger.
The funeral was largely attended, and
there was a beautiful collection of flor-
al tributes.
Mr Pumpa's only son, Will, died in
Queensland about two years ago. The
three surviving daughters are Mrs Alb.
Weber, Angaston; Mrs C. Yates, Hind-
marsh; and Mrs A. Hoban, of Gal way
Gardens. There are also 12 grandchil-
dren, three step-sons and four step
daughters. Mr John Pumpa, Eden
Valley, is an only surviving brother.
