OBITUARY.
Mr. Johann Carl Seidel, who died at
Tanunda on September 4, in his eighty
ninth year, was a colonist of more than
70 years. He was widely esteemed among
a large circle of friends. The deceased
was one of the best types of the law
abiding and industrious.pioneers who have
helped to foster the agricultural develop
ment of the State. He was born at
Treppel, Brandenburg, Germany in 1836.
In 1854, at the age of 18 years, young
Seidel left Europe with his parents for
Australia, and began farming operations
at Tarnma (formerly known as Friedrich-
swalde). Later he started farming at
Dimchurch (formerly knows.as Neukirch),
near Stockwell, and subsequently also took
a keen interest in gardening, at which he
achieved great success. He was the first
pioneer in the Neukirch locality to under
take the planting of vines on a commer
cial scale, and lived to see the tremendous
development of this great Australian in
dustry; After a. long, useful, and suc
cessful business career, Mr. Seidel retired,
about 15 years ago, and. chose the beauty
ful town of Tanunda as his home. He
was a loyal adherent and supporter of the
church, and was highly respected by all
who had business dealings with him. A
widow, four sons, and two daughters, be
sides many grandchildren survive. The
sons and daughters are Messrs. J. A.
Seidel (Loxton), H. Seidel (Victoria), G.
Seidel (Victoria), and W. Seidel (Dim
church, S.A.), and Mrs. G. Schrapel
(Tanunda), and Nurse Seidel (Tanunda).
